An AlaVie Boot Camper turned coach, Lisa Beckham says she wasn’t very athletic growing up.
However, she’s always exercised. Before she started AlaVie Boot Camp in November, 2005, Lisa had been going to the gym for years, but she was getting tired of the routine. Plus, when she started working, “my fitness routine took a back seat.”
“My motivation wasn’t there. There’s that stuffy feeling at the gym. I’d decided I wanted something different. When I was at my hair dresser’s, I saw an ad for AlaVie. The headline said, ‘Tired of the gym? Need a change?’ I took it as a sign, went home, checked out the website, talked to my husband about it, and signed up.”
Once she started boot camp, Lisa - who lives in Campbell with her husband, son, and daughter - never looked back.
“There is camaraderie with the group at boot camp that’s different from being in a class at the gym. You mesh as a group, and the support is phenomenal. You have different sizes, different ages, but we’re all helping each other out. The term boot camp can be intimidating, but it’s just because of the variety of exercises we do.”
“It wasn’t until after I gave birth and had post-partum depression that I took my fitness to the next level. It was (is) what keeps my depression from flaring up.”
In addition to boot camp, Lisa started participating in 5K, 10K, and marathon races, along with volunteering for the Team in Training program.
In May, 2007, she made the transition from boot camper to coach.
"I love to motivate and encourage people because it's what keeps me going. In addition to the competitiveness, I like to bring out the fun aspect in fitness."
