“I embraced fitness as a career because I am passionate about making a positive difference in people's lives,“ Crissy Field Head Coach Alexis Craig says, “My brother is a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors told him he would never move again. Today, he has worked hard and been rehabilitated to walk by a FITNESS trainer. Witnessing this transformation showed me that a trainer can make a huge difference in a person’s life. Any goal is achievable when you have someone at your back to encourage, support, inform, and believe in you all the way. I knew that I could take my super spirited cheerleader self, and inspire others to find fitness as fun as I do.“
Growing up in Lake Tahoe, Alexis learned to love hiking, swimming and snowboarding. As a child, she danced competitively and ran a dance studio with her sister. In high school, she started cheerleading “and never stopped.“
“I cheered for Harvard, and currently perform with Cheer SF. I've been studying self defense and martial arts for about four years, and was surprised to find how similar it is to cheerleading – lots of kicking, punching and yelling.“
“These days, I love yoga, and exploring the connection between the mind, body and spirit,“ she continues, “I'm becoming more playful in my practice and currently learning breakdancing, parkour, and circus arts.“
Believe it or not, all of this is a downshift from her earlier days of training to become a competitive fighter: “I wanted to have a professional debut in the cage. I was training in Krav Maga, jiu-jitsu, and MMA, plus doing CrossFit, TRX, and yoga daily. Nine concussions later, I found peace, and turned away from fighting, and competition in general.“
Her favorite part of coaching? Being a resource for people in their journeys toward health. Alexis is “constantly amazed“ at how physical changes correspond with attitude shifts.
“It is so rewarding to encourage clients to find their inner power to change. In week one, you may be terrified to let your feet above your head, but by week four, you’ll be rockin' the handstand!“
Her approach to coaching combines optimism and rigor. While being “passionate about positivity,“ she's strict on form and determined to challenge people “to the edge of their abilities.“
“I love to help people find joy in movement and connect to their bodies with curiosity,“ she says, “I also want all my students to know that this is more than a job to me. I actually really care about their experience, and I am always happy to answer questions, hear feedback, or share experience in or out of a session.“
